Theodor von Grotthuss Laboratory, located in Gedučiai near Žeimelis, Lithuania, has been honored with the 2023 EuChemS Historical Landmark Award at the Regional level. This recognition celebrates the site’s pivotal role in the advancement of chemical science in Europe. Notably, this is the first and so far the only site in Eastern Europe to receive this important recognition (https://www.euchems.eu/awards/euchems-historical-landmarks/grotthuss-laboratory-lithuania/).
The laboratory is historically significant as the place where Theodor von Grotthuss (1785–1822), a Lithuanian-born scientist of German ethnicity, conducted his experiments. In 1805, he established the first theory of electrolysis, introducing what is now known as the Grotthuss mechanism. Later, in 1817, he formulated the first law of photochemistry. These foundational contributions have had a lasting impact on the fields of chemistry and physics, influencing notable scientists such as Michael Faraday and Svante Arrhenius and others.
Today, the original building where Grotthuss conducted his experiments still stands. The Žiemgala Museum in Žeimelis plans to establish an educational laboratory for visitors and schoolchildren, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
